circa 2nd-3rd century AD
Ring size: O
Provenance: Collection of Tyll Kroha, Cologne, Germany acquired 1960s
Roman silver ring with Greek inscription reading 'Ἀπόλλωνος', or 'of Apollo', suggesting that the owner was a follower of the god. The ring has a central raised circular bezel, on which two of the letters are inscribed. The band slants outwards on either side, creating an overall rhomboid shape in the outer shaping of the ring, whilst the inside is typically circular.
Condition: Intact
Literature: For a ring of similar shape and design, though crafted in gold, and a discussion of the ring type, see S. Hindman et al (eds.), 'Cycles of Life: Rings from the Benjamin Zucker Family Collection' (London, 2014), p. 46, no. 4.
