Egyptian carnelian and red jasper necklace
New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty, c.1400 BC
Length: 43 cm
Comprising 96 spherical beads, 6 stylised poppy-head beads and a central snake-head pendant, mostly of carnelian with some red jasper. The poppy head beads dating from the New Kingdom, other elements possibly later.
Restrung and with modern gold clasp.
Literature: A necklace with similar poppy head beads can be seen in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the gift of Mrs Goddard Dubois (acquisition number 46.1459).
