A bronze slightly domed discoid miniature shield with flange rim and U-shaped grip to the underside; old collector's acquisition number to the flange. Extremely fine condition.
The offering of miniature weapons at shrines or in a body of water, such as lakes, springs, rivers and bogs, was a common practice amongst the Celtic peoples before and after the Roman conquest. They were possibly associated with success in war or the appeasement of a warrior deity for good harvest or health.
